DS4MM’s use cases are based on real-world needs identified by public administrations and mobility operators and are grouped into four main categories:

Public transportation
DS4MM helps improve the planning and operation of public transportation by analyzing routes, frequencies, and demand. It facilitates service optimization, the study of intermodal hubs, and the provision of more accurate information to users, including in cross-border contexts.
Freight
In the field of logistics, DS4MM provides a better understanding of how freight moves, identifies strategic points in the logistics network, and supports the planning of more efficient transportation, both within a country and across different regions.
Traffic
DS4MM helps improve traffic management by monitoring congestion, predicting bottlenecks, and analyzing special operations. This enables a shift from reactive to proactive management.
Sustainability
The project supports emissions assessment, monitoring of Low-Emission Zones, active mobility, and the planning of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, thereby contributing to more sustainable mobility policies.
Pilots
Validating the Model in Real-World Settings
Pilot projects are a central component of the DS4MM project. Their goal is to demonstrate, in real-world contexts and using real data, that the proposed data space model works, adds value, and is replicable.
Through the pilot projects, the project validates how data, mobility models, and data governance can be applied to specific mobility problems at different territorial and organizational levels.
The pilots allow us to verify that:
- Data from different sources can be combined in an interoperable manner.
- Mobility models generate results useful for decision-making.
- The system is applicable to different geographic and administrative contexts.
National Pilot
Winter Service Management: Predicting Occupancy in Emergency Parking Areas for Heavy Vehicles

This use case focuses on winter management of heavy traffic through automated systems that divert heavy vehicles to emergency parking areas during snow alerts. The information is transmitted via variable message signs and mobile apps, with the aim of improving safety, anticipating congestion, and strengthening operational management on the road.
National Pilot
Congestion monitoring on highways and major roads: Madrid, Valencia, Basque Country
SEITT
This use case focuses on monitoring congestion on highways and major roads. Based on a near-real-time assessment of traffic conditions on priority corridors of the TEN-T network, it enables more predictive congestion management and improves the ability to anticipate issues in road network operations.
Metropolitan Pilot
Demand Analysis at Intermodal Transportation Hubs: Madrid, Catalonia
Madrid Transport Consortium; Barcelona ATM and Catalan Traffic Service
The Madrid and Barcelona metropolitan pilot project focuses on demand analysis at intermodal hubs. Its objective is to identify optimal locations for new transfer hubs by integrating networks, traffic flows, accessibility, socioeconomic variables, land use, and the feasibility of modal integration. It aims to improve metropolitan planning and strengthen connectivity between different modes of transportation.

Operational Traffic Management in Adverse Conditions: Catalonia
Barcelona ATM and Servei Català de Trànsit
The Catalonia regional pilot project focuses on managing heavy vehicle traffic during adverse weather conditions. Its approach is based on an automated system capable of redirecting vehicles to alternative routes during wind alerts, using variable message signs and traffic management applications. The goal is to enhance safety and improve the operational response to incidents on the road network

The regional pilot project in the Valencian Community is dedicated to monitoring the activity and impacts of Low-Emission Zones. The focus is on variables such as traffic, mobility, and the urban and environmental context, with the aim of facilitating their control, evaluation, and monitoring through a data-driven approach

The Andalusia regional pilot project focuses on the assessment of transportation emissions. This use case involves a spatially explicit calculation of emissions, disaggregated by vehicle type, mode, and distance, to support regional planning and the evaluation of public policies related to mobility, sustainability, and the reduction of environmental impact.

Basque Government and Nouvelle-Aquitaine Euroregion, Basque Country, Navarre
The cross-border pilot between France and Spain includes a use case focused on passenger mobility between the two territories, analyzing the suitability of services and infrastructure to improve connectivity and the continuity of travel between connected regions.

This use case focuses on passenger mobility between Portugal and Spain, with particular attention to public transportation services, travel flows, and the alignment of the network with the actual connectivity needs between regions. Its objective is to improve understanding of cross-border mobility and support more coordinated planning of services and infrastructure.

In addition to passenger transport, this pilot also includes the analysis of freight transport, the monitoring of emissions associated with freight transport, and charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Together, these use cases broaden the perspective on cross-border mobility, integrating transport, sustainability, and infrastructure within a single analytical framework.
