A mobility model is a structured representation of how traffic, people, or goods move within a given area, built from real-world data. These models also make it possible to assess associated impacts, such as emissions, and to transform data into useful information for planning and decision-making.

That is why DS4MM promotes a common exchange framework that facilitates the connection between heterogeneous sources, the use of consistent metadata, and the validation of information, ensuring that data is comparable, reusable, and suitable for feeding into mobility models.
DS4MM is not simply about publishing data; rather, it is about sharing it under clear rules. This involves defining who can participate, the conditions under which information is accessed, what uses are permitted, how credentials are managed, who validates metadata and policies, and how issues such as data quality, versioning, and dataset updates are addressed. The approach being developed in the project is geared toward collaborative governance, where different stakeholders have clear responsibilities without losing control over their data.
For a data space to function, technology alone is not enough: safeguards are needed. DS4MM incorporates principles of privacy, security, traceability, and shared responsibility, aligned with the European framework and the project’s own logic, which provides for audit services, monitoring, and governance policies to ensure reliable communications among participants. Thus, the data space can generate public value without sacrificing control, transparency, or information protection.
