Every day we use dozens of mobility systems without really thinking about everything happening behind the scenes. We take public transport, check a traffic app, receive alerts about road incidents, or travel across several cities and regions in a single trip. And while we do all of that, enormous amounts of data are being generated.

The problem is that much of that information still operates separately.

Public administrations, transport operators, road managers, technology companies, and railway infrastructure providers often work with systems that do not communicate well with each other. The data exists, but it is scattered. And that makes it harder to take fast, coordinated, and truly efficient decisions.

Europe has been trying to address this problem for some time. This is where so-called data spaces come in.

Much more than sharing information

When people talk about data spaces, many imagine a large, centralized platform where everyone uploads information. But that is not how it works.

A data space is, above all, a way of collaborating.

It allows different organizations to share information securely and under common rules, without losing control over their own data. Each participant decides what they share, with whom, and for what purpose.

This is especially important in mobility, where many different actors are involved and where much of the information can be sensitive or strategic.

Because managing mobility today means coordinating traffic, public transport, logistics, emissions, infrastructure, urban mobility, or connections between territories. And no single organization has the full picture on its own.

Why Europe is promoting this model

The European Union considers data to be one of the key strategic infrastructures of the coming years. Just as investment was once made in roads, energy, or telecommunications, Europe is now promoting systems that connect information across countries, sectors, and public administrations.

In mobility, this makes a lot of sense.

Problems such as congestion, emissions, or planning do not stop at the boundaries of a city or region. What happens in one transport network directly affects others. However, for years, each administration has worked with very separate tools and data sources.

The idea behind data spaces is precisely to start connecting those pieces.

Not only to share information, but to better understand how a territory actually moves and make smarter decisions.

From reacting to anticipating

One of the major changes these models aim for is shifting from reactive mobility to more predictive mobility.

Until now, many public decisions have been made once the problem has already occurred:

  • When congestion appears,
  • When a road becomes blocked,
  • When transport becomes saturated,
  • Or when emission levels are already high.

With interoperable systems and connected models, administrations can start anticipating situations, coordinating responses, and planning more effectively.

And this is where projects like DS4MM begin to play an important role.

DS4MM: bringing data spaces into the real world

DS4MM (Data Space for Mobility Models) works precisely on this idea: how to turn data spaces into useful tools for real-world mobility.

The project brings together public administrations, operators, companies, and research centers from Spain, France, and Portugal to develop concrete use cases related to traffic, logistics, sustainability, and public transport.

The key point is that it does not remain theoretical.

DS4MM works with real-world pilots to understand what works, what administrations need, and how these systems can genuinely support public decision-making.

Because the challenge is no longer purely technological. The real challenge is ensuring that all this data actually helps improve mobility in a practical and operational way.

The future of mobility also depends on data

When we think about the future of mobility, we usually imagine electric vehicles, smart roads, or new infrastructure. But an important part of that change will be less visible.

It is related to the ability to connect information, coordinate systems, and make decisions based on real data.

Data spaces represent exactly that: a new way of collaborating between administrations, operators, and territories to build more efficient, more sustainable, and better-coordinated mobility.

Europe has already started down this path. Now the challenge is to turn that vision into useful solutions for the people who move every day.
