A few years ago, talking about smart mobility sounded almost futuristic. Today, we already live alongside applications that calculate routes in real time, systems that adjust public transport frequencies, and cities that are beginning to measure emissions and traffic flows almost minute by minute.
But behind all that technology, a problem remains: many organizations continue to work with isolated information.
Not because data is lacking. On the contrary. Mobility generates enormous amounts of information every day. The problem is that this information is usually spread across administrations, operators, infrastructure providers, and private companies that are not prepared to collaborate with each other.
And that is where EDIM comes in.
So, what exactly is EDIM?
EDIM stands for Integrated Mobility Data Space, and it is an initiative promoted within the European and Spanish context of mobility digitalization. Its goal is to enable administrations, operators, and other ecosystem actors to share and use information in an interoperable, secure way, governed under common rules.
But it is not about creating a single centralized database where everyone dumps information. Each organization retains control over its own data but can collaborate within a common environment that allows information to be connected, joint analysis to be generated, and decision-making to be improved.
This is important in mobility because practically everything is connected (public transport, traffic, emissions, urban mobility, etc.), and no single organization has a complete view of everything that is happening on its own.
But how do you turn all that information into useful decisions?
EDIM was created specifically to address this issue.
It does not aim to build “yet another system,” but rather to facilitate different organizations working with interoperable information and generating a more coordinated view of mobility.
What is complicated is not the technology
When talking about data spaces, the debate often focuses on artificial intelligence, digital platforms, or predictive models.
But the difficult part usually lies elsewhere:
- getting different administrations to work with compatible criteria
- coordinating information across territories
- defining who can access which data
- ensuring privacy and security
- or preventing each organization from continuing to operate as an independent silo.
That is why data spaces are so closely linked to governance and institutional coordination.
From pilot projects to public decision-making
One of the most interesting things happening right now in Europe is that data spaces have stopped being just a theoretical idea and are beginning to become real testing environments.
This is where DS4MM (Data Space for Mobility Models) comes in, a European project that works with administrations, operators, and technology partners from Spain, France, and Portugal to validate how these models can work in real situations.
These pilots help identify real problems before scaling solutions, because designing models on paper is one thing, and quite another is seeing how they behave when different territories, regulations, operators, and data sources are involved.
What comes next
The big challenge for IMDS will not be purely technological.
It will ensure that all this digital infrastructure ultimately becomes useful for those who make decisions every day: administrations, operators, and public managers.
And that is probably the most important part. Because the success of data spaces will not be measured by the amount of information stored, but by something much simpler: whether they help improve how we move.
